Ways of Seeing

Attention

We may stand before the same work of art without seeing the same things.

You bring your own place in the world to every work you encounter, your memories, knowledge and senses.

With Ways of Seeing you experience a work of art or an architectual space at the first encounter with another kind of attention.

Then Sidsel brings in the artist, the time, the culture, and the history. Not to replace your experience, but to expand it. Another perspective appears.

The artwork hasn't changed.
Your way of seeing it has.

The Artworks

The seeing process

1. The Exercise in Written

See the image you are drawn to by considering the following questions:

  • Where did your eye go first?
  • Notice how your eyes move around the picture?
  • Does something in the picture draw your eyes back to an area?

2. Bring Yourself Into the Picture

Begin to deepen your attention by moving beyond seeing and bringing in a new way of seeing: listening to what you see:

  • stay in there and deepen the seeing by just looking
  • notice what happens when you stay longer in front of the same work of art
  • focus on something in the art work
  • then relax the eyes and make them wide. Is there a difference in what you see when focusing or wide eyes?
  • close your eyes, open them again and notice what you see.

3. Discover More

See What You Haven't Seen Yet

Every work of art holds more than one way in. With Sidsel beside you, a museum, gallery, church, or city becomes a place of discovery, where your own perception meets the artist's world, and each expands the other.

Come curious. Bring your own way of seeing.
You may leave seeing more than art differently.
