Hidden Venice

Behind the Scenes

Discovering Gems

Six Nights | May 11 - 17, 2027 |

This tour of Venice and its surroundings reveals some of the city's most hidden corners. Through different lenses, we explore the energy and mystery of this floating yet steadfast city of the past, moving beyond the familiar landmarks to discover a Venice that many visitors never experience.

Its history fascinates, its art endures, and its narrow streets, elegant buildings, winding canals, and hidden passageways whisper of secrets and stories. Beyond the city, the lagoon opens another world, while the Lido offers a glimpse into the quieter rhythms of local Venetian life.

Over seven days, we experience Venice from the land and water, on foot, by boat, and by bicycle, discovering the layers of history, mystery, nature, and everyday life that have shaped this extraordinary place.

Every corner of Venice has a tale to tell. This journey is about discovering the gems hidden within them.

Four Journeys

Walking through History

A City. A Republic. A Story Unlike Any Other.

A walk through the rich history of a city that is home to one of the most fascinating stories in the world. Venice was not only a city, but an independent republic that endured for more than a thousand years, rising from the waters of the lagoon to become one of the great centers of trade, art, culture, and political power.

But much of that story is easily missed when we move only between Venice's famous landmarks.

With Sidsel as our guide, we leave the most traveled routes and walk through streets, passageways, squares, churches, and neighborhoods where the history of Venice can still be felt. Here, the city begins to reveal itself through the details: a symbol carved into stone, an unexpected courtyard, the architecture of an old palazzo, or a narrow passageway leading somewhere we did not expect.

This is Venice understood from the inside, where the stories of merchants, artists, aristocrats, sailors, craftspeople, and ordinary Venetians begin to bring the city's extraordinary past to life.

A city. A republic. A mystery. And a story best discovered on foot.

Walking in Mystery

Listening to the Whispers of La Serenissima

Venice is a mystery in itself, a city that seems to float somewhere between water and sky. How can it possibly stand without sinking? The water is both its lifeblood and its greatest enigma, flowing through a maze of canals beneath a city built upon islands, mud, timber, and centuries of human ingenuity.

But the mystery of Venice goes far beyond how it was built.

Step away from the crowds and another city begins to emerge. Narrow passageways disappear beneath buildings. Bridges lead into unexpected courtyards. Ancient wells, faded symbols, unusual carvings, hidden gardens, and nearly forgotten stories wait just beyond the familiar routes.

Sidsel has spent years discovering these corners of Venice, and this walk follows some of the places that continue to fascinate her. We wander without rushing, allowing the city to reveal itself through stories, details, and discoveries that most visitors pass without noticing.

This is the Venice that cannot be found by following a checklist of monuments. It asks us to become curious, to look more closely, and occasionally to get a little lost.

Because in Venice, what is hidden may be more interesting than what is famous.

Sailing the Lagoon

Discovering the World That Made Venice Possible

The Venetian Lagoon is an extraordinary geological landscape, shaped over centuries by the delicate balance between natural forces and human intervention. Covering approximately 550 square kilometers and averaging only about one meter in depth, it is a constantly changing world of shallow water, mudflats, marshes, channels, islands, tides, and human settlement.

To understand Venice, we need to leave the city behind and travel out onto the water.

From the boat, our perspective changes. The crowded streets disappear and the horizon opens. We begin to understand Venice not as an isolated city, but as one part of an intricate lagoon environment that has shaped how people here have lived for centuries.

Our exploration takes us through the lagoon to Torcello, one of the earliest inhabited islands in the lagoon and an important settlement long before Venice became the city we know today. Here, surrounded by open landscape, ancient buildings, and water, we encounter another chapter of the Venetian story.

Sailing through this remarkable environment offers something the streets of Venice cannot: a sense of how improbable this place really is, and how intimately its history has always been connected to water.

Before there was Venice, there was the lagoon.

Biking the Lido

The Other Side of Venice

There comes a moment when it feels good to trade stone streets and canals for two wheels, open sky, and the breeze coming off the Adriatic.

Our bike ride takes us along the narrow island of the Lido, a long strip of land separating the Venetian Lagoon from the sea. Here, Venice changes character completely. The crowds thin, the horizon opens, and the rhythm becomes slower and more relaxed.

We follow bike paths through neighborhoods and along the island, discovering a Venice where people actually live their everyday lives. Along the way, we stop in a small, charming village in the middle of the island, giving us time to step off our bikes, explore, and enjoy the atmosphere before continuing our ride.

The Lido offers a refreshing counterpoint to historic Venice. There is salt in the air, room to move, local homes and gardens, stretches of shoreline, and glimpses of a life largely unseen by visitors who never venture beyond the famous center.

After days of walking through history and mystery and sailing across the lagoon, we experience Venice from one final perspective:

With the sea breeze on our faces, traveling through the Venice where Venetians themselves escape the crowds.
